Lors de leur passage en m\u00e9dit\u00e9rran\u00e9e \u00e0 la fin du 18 et 19 i\u00e8me si\u00e8cles, les navires am\u00e9ricains \u00e9taient tenus d’avoir en leur possession un passeport de navigation en vertu du trait\u00e9 d’amiti\u00e9 sign\u00e9 en 1795<\/a>. Celui-ci garantissait un sauf-conduit pour le d\u00e9tenteur du passeport au niveau de l’article 4 du trait\u00e9 (1).<\/p>\n

Une copie du passeport \u00e9tait remise \u00e0 la marine Alg\u00e9rienne qui se chargeait de v\u00e9rifier l’authenticit\u00e9 du passeport. L’image suivante montre le passeport remis au navire Sarah et sign\u00e9 par le pr\u00e9sident \u00a0Thomas Jefferson. Il faut noter que le passeport devenait caduque d\u00e8s que le sceau \u00e9tait trou\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Au niveau du haut du passeport, l’image \u00e9tait coup\u00e9e comme mesure de protection et pour permettre aux bateaux de guerre Alg\u00e9riens de v\u00e9rifier l’original avec leur copie.<\/p>\n
